Built in 1881 by inmates of the Texas State Prison, the Texas State Railroad (oftentimes referred to as Iron horse) was originally used to transport the hardwood that fueled the furnaces of the iron smelter at the Rusk Penitentiary. Fast forward to now, where visitors can hop aboard for a journey back in time where they'll enjoy the scenic piney woods, rolling hills and hardwood creek bottoms that make this destination a true "Texas Treasure!"
With both steam and diesel excursions available, the Texas State Railroad offers special excursions throughout the year, including The Valentine Express, Dinosaur Train, Haunted Train Ride and The Polar Express.
Both depots are located off of Highway 84, between Palestine and Rusk, Texas. For directions to the Palestine and Rusk depots, click here.
